Nagaland is situated on the easternmost region of India.One of the seven sister states India, Nagaland is covered mostly by high-altitude mountains. Location

Nagaland is situated on the extreme northern east just below Arunachal Pradesh. It has on its long eastern strip the neighboring country Myanmar. The north is bounded by Arunachal Pradesh, while on its west lies the state of Assam. It is bordered by Manipur on its south.

High mountains, deep gorges, green valleys, twisty streams and exotic flora and fauna found in Nagaland give an idea about the physical features of the place.

History

Nagas belong to the Mongoloid group who migrated to this hilly region hundreds of years ago. The ethnicity of the state comprises of 15 different tribes of Tibeto-Burmese origin who crossed the neighboring Myanmar (Burma) to reach this territory.

During the British rule in India, the Nagas were known for their extreme courage. During the end of the 19th century, the British, knowing the importance of the tribes here, had established a very good relationship with them. The Nagas later had proven to be the most useful help for the British in fighting and chasing away the Japanese who, during the war advanced up to the present-day capital of the state Kohima.

Sixteen years after India attained her independence, Nagaland was given the status of a full-fledged state on December 1, 1963.

Horn Bill Festival


The “Horn Bill Festival” is held every year from December 1 to 10 at the Kisama village here. Horn bill is the most glamorous cultural festival celebrated in one of the most remote part of the world. The festival is named to signify the Nagas’ devotion to the hornbill bird, which has historically been a part of their folklore.

The Hornbill festival started in 2000 as a main event to promote tourism in the state and to bring all the tribes to unite them in one platform and under one roof. The festival serves the visitors as a window to Nagaland to experience the way of life and traditions, Along with traditional dance, song, food, wrestling, craft and archery, there is also the Naga chilli- eating championship, Miss Nagaland contest, a rock concert and a motor rally.

Yemshe


Yemshe is a harvest festival that is celebrated by the Pochury tribe of Nagaland very grandly in the month of October.  This is the best time for festivals. The arrival of the new harvest is welcomed with much exuberance and ebullience during this festival. The arrival of the festival is first announced by the village spokesman following which; the first part of rituals takes place. The last day of the feast observed as the feast-cleansing day. This Yemshe festival is celebrated in mainly in two phases, namely the Big and small Yemshe. The Big Yemshe is the time for preparations all around as the village youth cleanses the whole village. The purification of the house and a ritual feast characterizes the Small Yemshe.

Sekrenyi


The Sekrenyi Festival is celebrated sometime in February every year and lasts for 1o days. It generally falls in the 25th day of the month of ‘Kezei’ by the calendar of the Angamis, the tribe who celebrate this festival in Nagaland. The festival is to ensure the health and well being of the community during the coming year. It is an occasion of great merry making; enormous quantities of rice-beer, beef and pork are consumed.

Tuluni


This is the most important festival of the ‘Sumi’ tribe in Nagaland. The Tuluni Festival in Nagaland state is celebrated during the second week of the month July, a season of bounty in Nagaland. Tuluni is marked with feasts as the occasion occurs in the fruitful season of the year. This festival is celebrated with great pomp by the Sumi tribe of Nagaland.
